ARC Review! Playing Fast by Melanie Scott

When baseball bad-boy Finn Castro raises one eyebrow too many, the Saints send him down to the minors. He’ll have to earn back his major-league dreams with the Sarasota Springs Preachers. Finn’s certainly never claimed to be a man of the cloth, and cleaning up his act isn’t going to be easy with stunning Eva Harlowe at the heart of the team’s administration…

Eva knows having a crush on Finn Castro is about as sensible as wishing for an eighth day of the week, but seeing the gorgeously muscled player in person melts her resolve. If she’s planning to leave baseball at the end of the season, a hot fling could be a fantasy home run. But when no-strings sex begins to feel like a perfect partnership, will Finn and Eva choose the love of the game or real life together?

This is the first book I have read in this series, although I have heard of the others and actually think I have a couple of them on my TBR.

That said, I was able to follow this with no issue, even without having read the others.

I enjoyed Eva and Finn. Eva, with her backstory was interesting and I think realistic. I think she did what anyone would have done, or at least tried to do, in the same situation. And, I think breaking that pattern and living for herself after all of those years would be difficult. So, while she kept pushing Finn away, I was also able to believe in her actions and responses.

Finn was pretty much the exact opposite...he got what he wanted and at a fairly young age, so he was less able to see the value and more willing to allow immaturity to rule his actions. And, now he is paying the price for this and having to learn a little humility along the way.

I enjoyed the 2 stories as well as the way they worked together with one another, the way they each were able to balance the other. Eva showed Finn the great things about being responsible, while Finn showed Eva how to live for herself. The interactions between them were interesting and compelling.

I also really enjoyed the dialog. There was something about it that was so fluid, so well written, that I really was able to engage with the characters, to relate to their conversations and to really feel the flow of the conversation. This made both of them feel realistic.

The characters, the pacing, the plot and the development of the story were strong. I recommend this book.

Cover Reveal! The Fix Up By Kendall Ryan

We are very excited to bring you the highly anticipated cover for THE FIX-UP, the standalone novel from New York Times Bestselling Author Kendall Ryan.

The Fix-Up releases on October 11.

The Fix Up Kendall Ryan ebook cover
From New York Times Bestseller, Kendall Ryan, comes a sexy new standalone novel. My tempting, and very alpha friend Sterling Quinn is someone I consider off-limits. It's not just that we're friends, he's also a cocky, confident, and British, which means he's a walking aphrodisiac. But lately he's been giving me the look. You know the one. When he thinks I'm not paying attention, and his gaze lingers for too long. And then we start working together, and that's when the sexual tension between us gets so thick, I want to hack through it with a machete. I want to make all these deep feelings I've harbored for him disappear, because there's no way this can end well. The lines between business and pleasure become irrevocably blurred, and I'm stuck between a rock, and Sterling's very, very hard place. Rather than keep a level head about our growing attraction, Sterling wants to go all in, showing me just how explosive we can be together. But I've been around long enough to know that this British bad boy is more than my heart can handle. I'm not about to be cast aside like yesterday's underwear when he's done having fun. Sterling’s never been told no, and he's not about to put his ego aside and play by my rules. But I never thought he'd fight so dirty.   *This is a spin-off from the HITCHED series, but can be read as a standalone.

Blog Tour! Long Shot By Kayti McGee

longshotpinkMeredith definitely drank too much last night. Why on earth else would she have woken up without her purse, and the distinct memory of giving her number to a stripper? So gross.
The good news is, she never has to see him again. Except to get her purse. And to discover she did another terrible, horrible, very bad thing while drunk- she accidentally became a professional penis photographer.
Rob wishes more people would believe him when he says he truly is stripping his way through journalism school. It's the only way Millennials can afford school with no student loans. When Meredith quite literally stumbles across his path, he's super smitten. Sadly, she is less so once she sobers up.
Can he trick her into dating him? Can she trick her mother into thinking she has a respectable job?
And can anyone recover once the internet picks up their story? It's a long shot for both of them.

Krakens. Croissants. Penis Sweaters.

They were all in this book. Yes really.

First, I have to say that Kayti McGee makes me laugh. A lot. Enough that at least once, there will be a snort laugh that someone else notices (no sneaking these at work for me). Her writing is well constructed, her characters are realistic, and their internal dialog is hilarious. This one starts out with a bang, well, yes and no. And it goes from there.

What I enjoy most about McGee’s writing is that while it is funny, she still manages to tell a story, and one that has depth. A lot of romantic comedy lacks this, and it feels like you are watching a sitcom, that the characters are one dimensional and only exist for the payoff laugh. But in this, Meredith and Rob both have depth, personalities, wants, disappointments, and dreams that you can relate to.

I definitely knew where Meredith was coming from that she didn’t want to date a stripper, and I think a lot of us would feel the same way. I love that a lot of it comes from not being comfortable in that world, from feeling out of her element. That gives a charm to her and also lets the reader forget that maybe a stripper isn’t husband material.

Rob is trying to get through school without student loans. No easy goal, and he is close to pulling it off, which definitely gives you a glimpse into his character, as work and school, both full time, puts a drain on anyone…that he is able to manage tells you he is the kind of guy you want to get to know. And, just from this, it lets the reader understand what Meredith sees in him, and lets us believe that, stripper or not, there is more to Rob than immediately meets the eye…although, that isn’t bad either.

I adore how she falls into (onto?) the penis photography…but then takes it seriously. This came across as authentic. She is a photographer, she would take it seriously and want to do a good job.

I loved the interactions with Meredith and her family, especially grandma who you only meet electronically. They were supportive of her, as I think most families would be, in her situation. There was a little drama with her family, as some are more supportive than others, but isn’t that how it always is with families?

I highly recommend this book (although, as I mentioned, I do not recommend sneaking it at work). Kayti McGee is definitely a one-click author for me…and after Long Shot, I think she will be for you as well.

Did I mention there is a Kraken reference?

Strippers are people too damn it!  Yes I said it and yes I mean that.  Both male and female strippers are still people who are smart, who have degrees or are working towards one, and deserve to not be treated as less because of their jobs.  Okay I know y’all think I have probably lost my damn mind but  I promise I haven’t, well I probably have lost it a little bit but just trust me, read Long Shot and you will understand why I am saying this.

Meredith meets Rob during a drunken night at the strip club, one she barely remembers after all the drinks she had and she is horrified that she *gasp* gave her number to a stripper.  I know the horror right?  (Are you feeling the sarcasm coming through right now?)  Meredith is an out of work photographer who is living with her sister and her family.  So she has every single right to be judgmental, well I mean at least she isn’t a stripper right?

Rob may be a stripper but he is also a journalism major working on finishing up his degree.  He is stripping to pay his way through college so he doesn’t have any student loans when he graduates.  He is instantly enamored with Meredith and made it his mission to get her to date him.  Rob is sweet, funny, sexy and supportive of Meredith when she becomes a penis photographer (let that one sink in for a moment).  He is proud of her and wants her to stop thinking he is just a stripper, but someone who is sweet, falling in love with her, and is worthy of her.  Oh and his Kraken is pretty monsterous as well, you will understand the reference if you read the book.

So here is my dilemma, Long Shot is very funny, I would laugh so hard I would have tears in my eyes, but what took away from what I believe could be an amazing solid 5 star read, was Meredith.  Her constant snide stripper comments just made her a very judgmental bitch.  What made her job, a penis photographer mind you, better than Rob?  Sit and think about that one for a moment.  It wasn’t just Rob she was like that with, she was judgmental of an author and a teacher as well, so basically she is a prude who thinks she is better than anyone who likes to let go and have a little fun.  Rob was the character that made this book, he went to such lengths to prove to Meredith he was so much more than a stripper, that he was a person who had dreams, made mistakes, and had feelings just like she did.    Overall I did really like Long Shot, I just wish I would have been able to love it like I had wanted.

“Daemon!” an insistent voice called over the speakers in his room. He didn’t pay it any mind. He had the sexiest woman in the universe under him not wearing panties. Nothing was more important than that. “DAEMON!” the voice insistently called. Daemon looked up to the TV screen to see the press corps sitting with their mouths gaping staring back at he and Aimee. Aimee let out a small scream and scooted out of the camera range, until she accidently fell off the bed with an unladylike thump. He ran his hand through his hair. How could I have forgotten?! He had scheduled a press conference with the South Korean gaming press elite. As usual, he had left the permissions on his gaming system to bring up the video conferencing screen at the appointed time. When he was playing, he never had time to pause to answer, auto-answering had always made sense… until now. The press seemed to come alive at the same moment. Loud voices rose through the speakers and the journalists tried to ask their questions all at once. Daemon muted the TV and turned to Aimee, who was kneeling on the floor, peeking over the bed at the TV with wide eyes. Daemon felt his heart race. He couldn’t lose her now. Not when they were so close. Not over this. He held his hand out to her. “Aimee, I’m so sorry! I had forgotten that I had scheduled this interview.” Aimee’s muffled voice was hard to make out as she spoke into the down comforter. “Um… it’s okay. They can still see me, Daemon.” Daemon whipped his head back around to see their projected image in one of the screens. Sure enough, he saw himself laying across the bed with Aimee’s eyes peeking out over the top of the mattress. “Fuck. Just… just… dip down. I’ll take care of this.” He waited until he saw Aimee’s head disappear behind the bed. He unmuted the sound and immediately the shouting voices of the journalists jockeying for attention almost deafened him. “Please! PLEASE! Calm down! I am happy to answer your gaming questions,” he began, “But, my answer for anything relating to my personal life is ‘NO COMMENT.’”

ARC Review! Homecoming by Shannon Stacey

The New York Times bestselling author of Defending Heartsreturns to small-town New Hampshire where a substitute football coach and a guidance counselor tackle love.

They were the golden boys of fall: Stewart Mills High School’s legendary championship football team. Fourteen years later, they’re back to relive their glory, save the team—and find themselves again . . .

Sam Leavitt has two goals when he returns home to Stewart Mills to fill in for Coach McDonnell: to keep the school from finding a permanent replacement while Coach gets back on his feet, and to reconnect with his mother. As substitute coach for the high school football team, Sam must work hard to keep the boys on track, and that means spending time with the sexy guidance counselor he shared a hot night with months ago.

Jen Cooper knows what she’s looking for, and it’s not Sam—he wasn’t even supposed to come back. She wants a cultured, romantic soul, not some rough-around-the-edges guy with calloused hands—and a hard, muscular body. But seeing him every day forces Jen to question what she really wants out of life. And as Sam begins to deal with his past, Jen discovers there’s more to him than she imagined.
Sam and Jen were an interesting couple. I liked that they had history, that there was an attraction there that neither of them were sure it was a good idea to pursue.

I liked that they were both in places in their lives where they were questioning if what they had was enough or if they needed to maybe look for other opportunities. Jen was valued, she received her validation from the work she does...but she is lonely. Sam is still running from his past, from growing up in a less than perfect home environment with a town who knew all about his struggles.

So, when Coach has a heart-attack, both of them are forced to see things a little differently and to consider maybe making some changes in their priorities.

This is a pretty standard "one of the couple is leaving in x amount of days" story. It is well written. However, I did not buy into the reason, at the end, that was insurmountable. Without spoilers, splitting the distance solved the problem 100%...people drive farther than that all the time...and this seemed like a really weak test of their relationship and less than believable drama.

Overall, I recommend this...with the caveat that some of the plot needs a little work,IMO

Blog Tour! Last Chance By L.P. Dover

One last chance.

That's all Luke Collins, local bad boy and motocross champion, has to not only find his redemption, but win back the girl he lost. He'll stop at nothing to make her his, even if it means playing dirty.

Lara Jacobs doesn't want her heart broken again and refuses to give Luke a second chance. After he left her after their one night stand, she ran right into the arms of her close friend, Grayson Moore. He's always loved her, and he's determined to make her see he's what she needs.

However, in life nothing goes as planned and tragedy strikes. After a fatal accident nearly claims Lara's life, she's left inside a world she can't remember. Her memories are gone, including those of the men vying for her heart. Grayson sees her loss as a possibility to forget her love for Luke, but Luke sees it as an opportunity to start over. All he wants is one last chance to show her that she's the one he's been in love with all along.

*** An updated version of One Taste has been included in Last Chance with all new scenes. I highly recommend reading it again. ***

Okay I have a confession I need to make.  L.P. Dover is an author who I tend to have a hit or miss relationship with, but I try to always give her books a chance because when I love on I really love one.  So this series is perfectly titled for this book whore, second chances at love, at life and well for books because we all know they are what are the most important.  I didn’t like Last Chance, nope, not one bit.  I fucking LOVED it, I was so drawn in, the angst, the suspense, the drama surrounding Luke and Lara and Grayson, who I have to say deserves to be repeatedly kicked in the balls for all the shit he pulls.  Can you tell whose team I was on from the start?  Yep #TeamLuke all the way baby.  If you haven’t read the previous books it is okay, this can be read as a standalone, but I think you will love it even more if you have read the other books.

Last Chance is full of twists and turns that will have your heart racing, your gut clenching one minute and throwing your kindle the next.  *No kindles were harmed during the reading of this book*  You know the truth of what is going on but you want Lara to remember, to be able to feel that connection that is right and choose who her knows she is meant to be with even if her mind can’t remember anything.  Lies are told, sides are taken, and someone does something that could have had even more severe consequences than what actually happened.  Last Chance proves that sometimes even when mistakes are made; people can change especially when love is involved.

Last Chance reminds us that sometimes we do get second chances to be with the one we love, but to get that chance that we have to work hard, to not lose faith when some of the hardest of circumstances to overcome get in our way, that life is precious and if we get that second chance to hold on tight and do everything in our power to never lose it again.  L.P. Dover has written an emotional, second chance romance that had this book whore in angst filled knots from beginning until the very end.  #TeamLuke all the way!

“Why can’t I go in there and tell her I’m sorry? She needs to hear it from me.”

“No, she doesn’t because she won’t believe it. You need to do a lot more than tell her you’re sorry. Actions speak louder than words. And until you can show everyone you’ve changed, it’s best you stay away from her. It’ll only make things worse.”

“What if I go in there anyway?” I questioned, crossing my arms over my chest. I didn’t want to fight Evan, but I was getting desperate. I needed her forgiveness, for her to know I never meant to hurt her.

Evan huffed and closed his eyes. “You’ll have to go through me first. Lara doesn’t want to see you. She’s with someone else now.”

It was as if someone had sucker punched me in the gut, the air being ripped out of my lungs as I took the hit. Summer groaned and I glared at her. “Is that true?”

“Yes, but I don’t see how that is any of your business. She’s happy, so leave her be.”

“Fuck that,” I shouted. “I’m going inside.” I tried to push past Evan, but he blocked me. We faced off with each other, the tension rising.

Summer stepped between us with a hand on each of our chests. “Guys, this is stupid. You’re friends.”

I scoffed and backed away. “That’s where I beg to differ,” I said, glaring at Evan. “If our situations were reversed and it was Summer inside, I’d let you go to her. I would give you the benefit of the doubt and accept that you’ve changed. But you’re not going to do that, are you?”

Evan’s face softened and he sighed. “I would, brother, but this night is special for Summer and Lara. The last thing they need is you and Grayson battling it out. I have no doubt he’ll come after you if you go in there.”

I faltered, the anger welling in my chest. “Fucking Grayson? That’s who she’s with?”

“Can you blame her? He was there for her, after everything you put her through,” Summer said.

Peering down at her, I hoped she could see the determination in my face. “You tell her it’s not over. I’m not going to give up.” With those final words, I jumped in my truck and sped out of the parking lot. The thought of Grayson touching her made me so goddamn furious. I didn’t care if she was with him . . . I wasn’t going to give up.
