ARC Review! The Billionaire Bachelor by Jessica Lemmon

Release Date 6-28-2016

Indecent Proposal

Manwhore. That's what the board of directors-and the tabloids-thinks of billionaire bachelor Reese Crane. Ordinarily he couldn't care less, but his playboy past is preventing the board from naming him CEO of Crane Hotels. Nothing-and no one-will keep him from his life's legacy. They want a settled man to lead the company? Then that's exactly what he'll give them.

Merina Van Heusen will do anything to get her parents' funky boutique hotel back-even marry cold-as-ice-but-sexy-as-hell Reese Crane. It's a simple business contract-six months of marriage, absolute secrecy, and the Van Heusen is all hers again. But when sparks fly between them, their passion quickly moves from the boardroom to the bedroom. And soon Merina is living her worst nightmare: falling in love with her husband . . .

I did not want this one to end. Jessica Lemmon wrote a story that was a pleasure to read from page one. It was immediately engaging, well written, and plotted in a way that kept your interest as the story progressed. The characters and the dialog were authentic and they didn’t fell like “characters” but rather actual people. They stayed consistent, there were no moments where I felt that one of them acted in a way that was out of who they had been portrayed to be, and their decisions made sense.

Finishing a book that you love as much as I did this one is always bittersweet. On the one hand, you are glad to have enjoyed it as much as you did, thrilled that the characters you have come to love got their HEA, and glad, especially in this case, that the characters are in a better place than they were in the beginning. But I am sad it is over, sad that I don’t have any more new words to read about Reese and Merina.

Reese Crane has an image problem, complete with a flattering/not-flattering hashtag. His board of directors is holding this image issue over his head and refusing to appoint him to the Crane Hotels CEO position being vacated when Alex Crane retires. This is Reese’s dream position, one he has literally spent years working to attain, and refuses to let it be taken from him for a reason that he feels has no bearing on his ability to do the job.

Reese also has an issue that he doesn’t want to admit to himself. He has convinced himself he is hard, cold, uncaring, and incapable of commitment. Hence the string of single-night affairs that allow him to protect himself emotionally, but which may also cost him the CEO position as the board of directors is less than enthused by his reputation. This could be off-putting in a romantic hero, but it isn’t, as the reader quickly understands, it is not really what Reese wants, he is just afraid to open himself up to more. He hasn’t quite yet figured out that he is capable of being as passionate about another person as he is about the hotel chain.

Merina has a problem with doorknobs, her family’s hotel, and the new owner of that hotel. Of course, as we find out very quickly, this new owner is Crane Hotels. She is loyal, and while she does not see it at first, the commitment she and Reese share to being willing to do what it takes for things they care about is a tie that draws them together. She also wants to help the people around her, to care for them, to let them into her heart when they are hurting and to help them heal, so she is drawn to the part of Reese that he feels is broken, she wants him to see that he is capable of love and commitment.

Reese is convinced if he and Merina get married, the important problems, the problems he is willing to acknowledge, will be solved. So, Reese propositions Merina, thinking that this will solve his image problem and that as the marriage will be fake from the beginning, he will be able to stay closed off and guarded. He offers Merina the Van Heusen hotel as her divorce settlement and proposes a 6-month marriage of convenience that is in name only, except while in public, solving her issue with having someone else own her hotel.

You connect with both characters, and even though Reese is seen in a less than flattering light by Merina at the beginning, she quickly sees that his cold exterior is to hide a man who is not incapable of feeling, but rather scared to feel, because when he does he cares deeply, with his entire being.

The story itself is, in some parts predictable…but in a way that all romance novels are. The characters will meet, they will fall in love, one will be more reluctant than the other to acknowledge what is going on, and there will be a HEA, eventually. The pleasure in this story is how it is written and how much you care about Reese and Merina. You want them to get their HEA, your heart breaks for Reese and how hard he works to convince himself that he doesn’t feel. You feel for Merina, for how much she wants to help Reese become the man she has fallen in love with, the man he refuses to acknowledge still exists. He’s been hurt, and in a lot of ways he has never dealt with those hurts, so he is trapped in the past, behind the emotions that he has not resolved.

There were parts I loved, that detailing would be spoilers, but suffice to say that the author could have gone a certain direction with a couple of plot points, but chose to go in the less obvious direction, which I thought gave the story a fresh feel. One in particular I was expecting the entire book, but it never appeared, which pleased me.

I have read all of Jessica Lemmon’s books, and this is her best yet. I can’t wait for the rest of this series, Tag was a wonderful presence in the story and Eli mentioned enough you are accustomed to him as well.

ARC Review! Learning Curves By Cathryn Fox

When he wins a sexy bet, billionaire Linc Blair can’t wait to get Lauren Neill naked. He’s never gone for her type in the past, and he’s pretty certain it has more to do with her buttoned-up hotness than the nagging sense that something is missing from his life. But when he gets a glimpse of the vulnerable woman beneath the conservative, yet oh-so-sexy clothes, it’s a game changer.

Lauren can’t believe she’s spending a few days with one of sexiest, and most annoying men she’s ever met. But she can’t deny the chemistry between them, and for once in her life she’s letting down her guard so she can explore a different side of herself. The side only Linc brings out in her.

Taking it slow, he unleashes her sexuality and it quickly occurs to him that what started out as a bet for him has become something more. With their weekend nearly over, and her ex showing interest in this new confident version of Lauren, Linc will have to risk it all if he wants to win the game of love.
Novellas are hard to review, as they are by definition, shorter and not as developed, and I like developed stories. That said, it is possible to develop a story in a novella, it just takes a little effort, some attention to a different pacing, and an ability to know what can be skipped and what needs to remain in order for the story to work. Cathryn Fox does a wonderful job with all of this, creating a novella that works and feels like a full story.

In this case, Fox dealt with having less time to develop the characters by giving them an attraction they had been fighting for a year, an amusing reason to place a bet, a Linc who was brave enough to go for what he wanted when the opportunity presents itself. Their chemistry is clear as they try to avoid one another, to not speak to one another, and to generally pretend the other is not in the room...while being acutely aware of one another.

The characters were fun, they had great chemistry, and most importantly, I believed their attraction to one another. This matters, and can be a challenge in a novella. The sex was also hot, and this is also something that can be hit or miss in a novella, as you have to develop the attraction before the physical parts are steamy, and this was done very well.

I liked Linc and Lauren, I thought they were well developed characters and I found their reactions and behaviors to be consistent. The pacing was good and it spent the right amounts of time developing the important parts of the story while skimming past the non-essential parts.

I recommend this overall and am looking forward to the other novels through the new "Scorched" line with Entangled.

ARC Review! Get Lucky By Lila Monroe

What happens when you wake up in a hotel suite next to a gorgeous naked man with absolutely no memory of the past twelve hours?

I guess it's true what they say. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Or at least I hope it stays here. The Romantic Style convention was meant to be a weekend of raucous fun with friends, sun, and enough poolside margaritas to forget about my ex. But now, instead of meeting my fans and signing books, I'm stuck with cocky divorce lawyer Nate Wexler. He's arrogant, infuriating, and I can't keep my hands off of him. Judging by the state of our hotel room, last night was wild. I just wish I could remember it.

A pair of matching tattoos. A cheap wedding veil. A half empty box of glow in the dark condoms.

What the hell just happened?

Writing a funny erotic romance novel is not easy. I have read a lot of romance novels and the ones that go for light hearted and hot fall into 3 categories: Those that work. Those that focus on the humor too much and forget to focus on the heat and passion. Those that force the humor in-between the sex, but you can tell the humor was an afterthought.

This one just works. Lila Monroe did a 5 star perfect job with “Get Lucky” and the balance of the sex, humor and character development works.

I was laughing from page one, literally. Nate and Julia have the absolute best chemistry. And, Nate really is a sexy jerk, so you understand where Julia is coming from when she makes it clear she hates him. Through his POV (and a little help from his friends) you get to know Nate and learn why he is so closed off, why he is ok with people thinking he is a jerk. So, you are able to be ok with the budding attraction between the 2 of them. Even though they aren’t ok with it at all.

I know saying something is perfect isn’t really descriptive…but in this case it was. Nate and Julia had exactly the chemistry I wanted them to have. The book had the exact balance of humor and seriousness that I wanted. I was laughing, I wanted to know what would happen to them next, what one of them would say or do next, and I wanted to continue to explore their relationship. I wanted it all. Good thing this book delivered.

What I loved about this is that it seemed real, it seemed natural. I felt like I knew them through their story, like they were both people I would want to hang out with…ok, maybe not beginning of the book Nate, but end of book Nate.

I loved that even situations that seemed like there was no way this could possibly happen had a reasonable (well, a reasonable for Vegas anyway, which is a totally different bar) explanation that not only worked but fit with the characters.

It is written with a dual POV and in a series of scenes that are some flashback and others in current time. But, it never got confusing who was speaking or when it was, last night or today. This is because Julia and Nate are so well defined, you know who is thinking what. And, the non-verbal cues of the characters tell you immediately if something is happening in the “now” or during the drunken night.

Apparently, it is possible to find a character and story hot, even while snort-laughing.

About sharks.

And David Tennant.

Just read the book.

Review! The Bird And The Sword By Amy Harmon

Swallow, Daughter, pull them in, those words that sit upon your lips. Lock them deep inside your soul, hide them ‘til they’ve time to grow. Close your mouth upon the power, curse not, cure not, ‘til the hour. You won’t speak and you won’t tell, you won’t call on heav’n or hell. You will learn and you will thrive. Silence, Daughter. Stay alive.

The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would trade his soul and lose his son to the sky.

My father has a claim to the throne, and he is waiting in the shadows for all of my mother’s words to come to pass. He wants desperately to be king, and I just want to be free.

But freedom will require escape, and I’m a prisoner of my mother’s curse and my father’s greed. I can’t speak or make a sound, and I can’t wield a sword or beguile a king. In a land purged of enchantment, love might be the only magic left, and who could ever love . . . a bird?
Oh the feels…I just can’t even with this book. I immediately regretted finishing just so I could continue to feel everything. It’s like the rollercoaster when you get off you immediately get right back in line. I’m not gonna lie I immediately went back to the beginning and did an immediate re-read. The magic, the tales, the trust, the love, the adventure. This book had EVERYTHING within its pages. The book is based in a magical land where “gifted” people must hide in fear of punishment. Lark and Tiras’ relationship is so beautiful, watching them fall in love throughout the book is pure MAGIC. Amy Harmon’s writing of this world and tale flows so naturally I found myself lost for hours and hours in this place. The struggles, the trust and Bookjohni the troll is such an addition to the whole story line. Lark is mute in order to survive and Tiras is the King of the land in trouble, when Tiras takes Lark from her home and requires her services to help with the impending war she goes from one prison to another. But thru Tiras Lark is able to understand who and what she is and what she can do. Trust, friendship and Love come next and through it all you watch the characters grow and overcome all of the obstacles. I recommend this book to anyone and EVERYONE! Get lost is in this world you won’t regret reading it, only finishing it.

Release Blitz! Danger By Fiona Davenport

Anna Martin was looking for a nanny position, but she found more than she bargained for when she fell for single dad Nic DeLuca. When she finds out he’s a mafia boss, her head tells her to run but her heart tells her to stay. With his baby girl in the hospital, Anna stands by her man in his time of need. But when danger swirls around them, will they manage to find happiness together?

Please note: Nic & Anna’s romance is a three-part story, but there are no relationship cliffhangers.
If you haven’t read Deception then stop right now.  Danger can NOT be read as a standalone.  These are novellas so please go read Deception before beginning Danger.  Trust me.  If you are a fan of insta love, mafia, alpha males and innocent females this series is one you won’t want to miss.

Nic and Gianna, Anna to the rest of us, pick up right where Deception ends.  No there isn’t a true cliffhanger in the original sense of the word.  Each does end but it is because their story isn’t finished yet but their relationship is not in question. Danger not only shows what danger Anna is in but  what Nic’s daughter is going through as well, and yes read the books to find out since I am not telling you.

The way this one ends has this book whore on the edge of her seat needing to know not only how Nic is going to respond but what else is in store for him and his Gianna.  These novellas are a great way to spend a couple hours on  weekend and I am looking forward to the next one as well.

Damn, the girl was fast. But Nic was just as quick, because I found myself lifted off my feet, carried into the house, and placed onto the couch in the living room, in what felt like the blink of an eye.

He sat down next to me, leaning over, his face close to mine. "We need to talk." I pushed against his chest, trying to get out from under him, my mind a jumbled mess after everything I'd just heard. What I'd just learned about him. My Nic was a mobster. It was almost impossible to believe. He was into bad stuff, illegal stuff. Things about which I had zero clue because he'd kept me in the dark.

"We'll talk," he promised, his hand sliding under my robe and up my inner thigh. "After."

"After?" I stuttered, my breath hitching when he sank two fingers inside me.

"After you come on my hand, in my mouth, and on my cock."

I pushed against his chest again, even as my legs widened slightly, giving him better access to my body. "I'm angry with you, Nic. And hurt. And a little scared."

He stilled over me, staring down at me with pain filled eyes. "I will never hurt you, mia dolce. Never."

It was a heartfelt vow, and I believed him. It might make me the most naïve person on the planet, but I knew deep in my bones that Nic didn't mean me any harm.

"I know," I whispered softly, one hand sliding up his chest to cup his cheek. "But I'm still unbelievably angry with you."

"Then take your anger out on my body, Gianna, and let me show you exactly how sorry I am."

"But-" I tried to protest. Despite everything, my body responded to his dark tone. A quick twist of his wrist had his fingers rubbing against my G-spot and any coherent thought fled my brain.

With expert strokes, he drove me higher and higher until I was fulfilling the first part of his promise, coming on his hand. Then he dropped to his knees, lifting my legs over his shoulders, and his mouth latched on to me. He ate at me like he was starving—licking and sucking while he held my hips down so I couldn't move. It wasn't until I'd come twice more that he lifted his head. I saw my wetness glistening on his beard before he wiped it against my belly, bared as the robe had parted wide down the middle. Then he unbuckled his belt, unzipped his pants, and pulled his cock out. It was hard and bobbed thickly against his stomach.

Without any preamble, he lifted my hips into the air, lining us up and driving inside of me. Sensitive from my orgasms, I felt every inch of him as he slid against my drenched heat. He was so big, my body had to stretch to take him all. Somehow, I was both uncomfortable and excited at the same time. Then he pulled out, only to thrust back in and my mind blanked as he pounded into me. Deep and hard. I'd thought he'd been rough with me the night before, but it was nothing compared to the way he was taking me now. Like he owned me, and my body loved it. I was caged between his muscular body and the couch, writhing in ecstasy, and even with what I knew about him, it felt like exactly where I belonged. When his mouth dropped down to mine, claiming it in a searing kiss, I was thrown over the edge once again, taking him with me.

Chest heaving, on a panting breath, Nic growled, "Now we can talk. And you'll listen to me, with my come filling your pussy."
