The one man she’s always wanted is now the sexy sheriff of their hometown. Battered but not broken, grad student Brianna Avery returns to the childhood home she abandoned four years ago. With her abusive ex behind bars, Bree needs the summer to relax and recover before returning to school. But her overprotective brother decides she needs someone to babysit her in his absence, and he picks the one person guaranteed to drive her nuts. She’s the one woman he can’t have. Telling Bree no has never been easy. Four years ago, Liam Hollister did it to preserve his friendship with his best friend—Brianna’s brother. Now, no matter how she tempts him, he’s determined to do the right thing. As deputy sheriff of their rural area, Liam is torn between protecting Brianna and wanting her for himself. Take a risk or lose the chance. Spending so much time alone together challenges them both. Old feelings and hurts resurface immediately. With each hot, sweaty day it’s harder to deny their attraction. It’s going to be a long, hot summer.
Bullets And Bonfires by Autumn Jones Lake is a friends to lovers, best friend’s little sister romance where the heroine is a broken and finds not only her strength but also has a possibility of seeing what real love should be. This is a standalone so no worries if you haven’t read any books by Ms. Lake before even if some characters make an appearance it won’t have you confused.
I have to be honest it did start off a bit slow for me and I had a hard time connecting with Bree but slowly I started to like her when she began gaining her life back, her confidence, and is no longer afraid to stick up for herself, a victim she will be no more. I liked the feisty side that would come out but at times it seemed like would flip flop from being beaten and scared to finally finding that sass again only to retreat once more.
Liam is hot for his best friend’s little sister, and even though he may have hurt her years ago by pushing her away it was the last thing he wanted. He struggles between being the protector and the guy he wants Bree to come to. His police training at times I felt held him back, because while yes she was a victim she was also a fighter and he lost a few opportunities to prove himself to her but I understood his inner struggle. Liam is HOT! Like I would let him cuff me willingly hot any day of the week.
Bullets And Bonfires deals with domestic violence, and while I have suffered from it myself it didn’t trigger me in any way. I think the way Ms. Lake went about this difficult subject was good, she showed that you can stand up and fight back and that you can get away from your abuser, that you did nothing wrong and it can happen to anyone. I liked the empowerment she made Bree feel when she learned how to defend herself.
Bullets And Bonfires is a book that I enjoyed and one that I can easily recommend to be on your TBR lists. I need to get caught up on her other series because I am curious to read the stories of some of the characters that we saw in this book that are also a part of that series as well.
