About me

Hi I'm Janna and I am a book whore! I started this blog after being a part of another for years. While being a big blog may be nice I like to stay true to me having a love for books, that's why I blog. I love books and I want to share that love with my readers of this blog. I love to read, books are my escape and a huge part of my life besides my husband and two children. I am honest and sometimes sassy in my reviews but never mean. Some of my favorite authors include Kristen Ashley, Penelope Douglas, T.M. Frazier, M.N. Forgy, Rachel Van Dyken, Meghan March and Vi Keeland to only name a few!

Please note that I am the ONLY reviewer on the blog beyond a few guest reviews. It has been brought to my attention that people not associated with my blog have been requesting ARCs please if you ever question a request please email me at the blog's email.

ARC Review! Called Up by Jen Doyle

There's one thing Max "Deke" Deacon can always count on besides his old high school teammates: Angelica "Fitz" Hawkins. But no matter how much Deke might secretly fantasize otherwise, a relationship with his best friend's sister is off limits. Until one unexpectedly smoldering encounter has Deke and Fitz giving in to the feelings they've both been fighting for far too long.

Fitz knows for a fact that it is not better to have loved and lost. After losing her parents, she'd rather lock up her heart and throw away the key than endure that kind of pain again. If that means giving up any hope of a lasting relationship, then so be it.

But with Deke, Fitz feels dangerously close to falling in love. She can't risk another broken heart—especially if it means losing one of her best friends for good. Now it's up to Deke to convince her that the safest place she could ever be is right here with him.

First, and most importantly, this is listed as a standalone...but there are enough details that you need to know from the exposition of the first book that you are just a little lost in this book.

I found the pacing of this to be a little odd and that the book was oddly focused on events that happened to the characters 16 years ago in high school...but at one point, they would discuss how they didn't matter...but then they would become the focus of the whole story. This, combined with not feeling like I had enough to really understand what was happening.

The baseball cover and title also don't seem to fit. One of the secondary characters is a professional baseball player, but aside from coaching Little League, Max "Deke" Deacon owns a bar. So, I am not really clear on the reference there.
Fitz and Deke, when they were together, which took a while, were great. Honestly, those parts of the book were 4-5 stars...it was the rest of it, and the fact that I never really understood what I was reading (I think the 1st book is necessary here) that brought my rating down. That and the fact that this is billed as them having a hot night and then them fighting it...but the hot night is oversold in the description, and the book is about them ignoring their attraction and the kissing and romance don't happen until much later. Much later. Which was disappointing, as the opening scene with the bar in and the song sets up a much hotter story than I actually got from this.

I think you need to read the first one...if you have, this may be more appealing, as I found myself frustrated by how stuck it was in the past, frustrated by the time it took to tell the story AND frustrated by feeling like I didn't even have all of the info to understand the story I was already annoyed with.

All in all, I don't recommend this book....or maybe I recommend it with caution and the "read the 1st in the series" caveat.
